Twitter recently introduced a new advanced search feature that makes it easy to find people and topics you want to connect with. Although the new advanced search is opt-in, I want to show you how to get the most out of it.

I’ve been using Twitter for more than 3 years now, and have built quite a successful business around it. Since 2010 I have accumulated more than 100,000 Twitter followers, which has helped me to create an audience of highly relevant people interested in my posts. I have used Twitter’s advanced search options to build my social media strategy, for instance by following certain influencers, or finding relevant hashtags.

Twitter’s new advanced search will make using Twitter smarter and faster. It’s called “Search Advanced” and can be found on the left hand side of the Twitter homepage. It’s big news for the twitter community because it allows you to search for people and topics by keywords. Many people in Twitter now ignore (or don’t know how to use) the advanced search feature. So here is a step by step guide on how to use it to find people and the best keywords to use to target them.. Read more about advanced search twitter not working and let us know what you think.

There are 69.3 million active users on Twitter in the United States, which means the platform is full of potential when it comes to generating leads in the United States.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to effectively find potential customers on Twitter – unless you know how to use Twitter’s advanced search terms. That’s why I’m going to explain what advanced keywords are and how you can use them to attract more leads.

Why you should use Twitter’s advanced search feature

Twitter’s advanced search feature allows you to target users based on their location, interests, etc. You can even find users talking about your business without tagging you (or @).

You’ve probably already used the Twitter search bar on the right side of your desktop screen or the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of your mobile screen to search for basic things like hashtags and users.

Let’s say you’re looking for a company like Converse. You’ll see accounts related to your search, top tweets, and recent tweets that mention that keyword.

Since this survey is general in nature, it probably won’t tell you much.

And if Converse is your company or a competitor, that’s disappointing.

Millions of tweets are published every day. To find exactly what you’re looking for, you need filtering tools to narrow down your search.

This is what Twitter’s advanced search option enables.

Possibilities and reasons for using advanced search options on Twitter

There are many reasons why you might want to use Twitter’s advanced search features. The search mode depends on the type of information you are looking for.

Twitter’s advanced search feature allows you to view tweets from people or companies using any term. This is a little more complicated than the normal search option.

Currently, Twitter’s advanced search feature is only accessible on the website or web app on your desktop, not through the Twitter app on your phone or tablet. The following suggestions can be used in the app or on the website, but honestly, the advanced search feature on the desktop is easier, and we recommend you use it if you have the option.

2. Searching Twitter by sentiment

Sentiment research can help you understand what keywords people use and why they use them, using a basic form of natural language processing (NLP). This research is generally divided into three categories: positive, negative and neutral.

If you know what people are looking for and why, you can understand the needs of your potential customers.

You can buy programs to do a full NLP analysis of Twitter, but to some extent you can do it yourself. First, look for happy or sad faces and punctuation marks to go with the keywords you have chosen.

In the example below, I searched on the phrase iphone? to find people asking questions about the iPhone. You can filter the results to show top tweets, recent tweets, people, photos or videos. There are other options in the application, but they sometimes change depending on the news.

This simple search is a great way to find out what questions people have about your industry, your products, or even your competitors’ products.

Just make sure you read the context of each tweet, because sentiment filters are contextual.

People asking questions about the iPhone may be looking for applications, security information, or troubleshooting guides. But he could also be looking for a buyer for his used phone, making a joke, or asking a completely incoherent question – this search is all about words and punctuation.

Even with less relevant results, searches by feel narrow the field a bit and can be a great way to find users looking for answers or recommendations. If you can answer these questions by demonstrating the credibility of your brand, you can become a new prospect.

This method can be more effective if you run a local brand and are not competing with international players.

3. Use location filter

Find tweets in any country or city using geolocation filters.

This way you can exclude tweets from remote locations. This is important if you have a small local business, as you can target potential customers directly in your area.

Just type near:(city/state) and within:(X miles) to find tweets from a specific location in the world.

Close: The add-on filters exactly where you want to see the tweets from. Come in: This add-on allows you to choose the distance from which you want to see the tweets.

It essentially creates a radius around the city, county, or other region you specify with the near: parameter.

If you z. B. If you own a restaurant in a certain place, you can find anyone looking for a place to eat and direct them to your business.

To do this, enter a keyword from your industry (for example, Japanese restaurant) and add next to:(your location) within a radius of:(X miles) to find potential customers locally. We recommend searching the latest versions to find people who are hungry now.

Your results should look like this:

Finding new customers can be just as easy.

And if you help users answer their questions, for example by giving them advice on how to use the internet. B. where to find good soba – this can improve your online reputation, which is an added benefit of using meaningful search.

Sentiment research can give you an idea of what people are saying about your competitors and what they are asking of them.

If you notice that customers are unhappy with a feature of your competitor, respond on Twitter with relevant information about your services.

You can dive into any conversation and add your opinions and reactions to build engaging relationships with Twitter users.

4. Follow mentions on Twitter by searching user names

One of the easiest ways to keep track of new leads is to search by username to track mentions.

Just add to:. or from: for the username.

A : The search displays tweets sent to this user. If you z. B. If you search for:NeilPatel, you can see the tweets that other Twitter accounts have sent me, in response to my tweets and theirs.

If you say enter before my name, you’ll see the tweets I sent instead:

With this option, you are more likely to find your competitors’ tweets, not yours.

Let’s just say I’m curious if anyone has any questions for me about branding. All I have to do is use this keyword to add :.

Hint, I added a question mark to narrow down the list.

All I have to do is communicate with these users.

5. Save advanced search on Twitter

Twitter allows you to store up to 25 searches per account. That’s a lot of research to keep up with.

To save your search, click on the three dots to the right of the search. Then select + Save search.

You can track how people are sharing your blog posts, mentioning you or your competitors, or tweeting about certain keywords.

6. Use advanced search on Twitter to eliminate irrelevant results

Use the exclusion filter to eliminate search results you don’t need.

Just add an icon – for a keyword, filter or Twitter user.

For example, if you want to find Twitter users talking about smartphones, but don’t want to see tweets from a competitor (e.g. Samsung), just search smartphone -samsung.

.

It can be just as simple to achieve outstanding results.

7. create and search hashtags

If you use hashtags correctly, you can create your own filter to attract potential customers.

Use one hashtag at a time, make sure it’s relevant and creative, and add it to most of your posts.

One of the most successful brand hashtags is #PutACanOnIt by Redbull:

This hashtag became popular worldwide as people were encouraged to get creative with Red Bull cans, take a picture of it and share it with the hashtag.

This not only allows your customers to do marketing and product placement for you, but also creates a branded hashtag that you can use in future interactions with Twitter users.

Hashtags like this can encourage people who have never bought your products to buy them so they can join in the fun.

However, you do not need to perform an advanced search manually. Save time and let Twitter do all the work for you.

8. Using the advanced Web search feature

As mentioned earlier, the advanced search feature is only available on the Twitter website, not in the app. If you have a computer or are visiting the site through a browser on a mobile device, this method may reduce your search time.

Next to the search bar, you will see three dots. Click on these items and select Advanced Search.

From there you will be taken to this form where you can perform various actions. You have to scroll through the screen a few times to see all the available options – that’s how sophisticated this feature has become. What is displayed on each reel may vary slightly depending on your computer, but this is what you can generally expect.

The first screen shows the basic settings: words to use, words to exclude and hashtags to search.

After the first passage, you can select the language, tweets to and from accounts, tweets mentioning accounts, and filtering options for the beginning of the reply.

The following role gives you additional options for answers. You can include or exclude links and determine the level of engagement of a post before it is posted.

The last scroll lets you select the date range of the tweets you want to view.

You can select as many filters as you like and then click the Search button.

The only thing the advanced search cannot do is the specific distance option. If I wanted to find tweets about Japanese restaurants within a 10-mile radius of Seattle, I’d do it through the normal search bar. However, I can search for Japanese restaurants in Seattle via an advanced search by including Japanese restaurants in Seattle in the first search filter.

I recommend reducing the data for each search. Tweets from seven years ago won’t help you get more leads, but tweets from today might.

You can search for tweets from the last few days, weeks or months, or even the last year.

If you want to spend a few extra dollars each month for even more advanced Twitter searches, there are several paid programs like Twilert.

How to connect with your prospects through advanced search on Twitter

It’s all for naught if you don’t connect with Twitter users who could be part of your target audience. Once you’ve filtered your search to find the type of tweets you’re looking for, you can start engaging with users.

  1. User response

Whether the user has contacted you directly on Twitter, asked a question you can answer, or requested a buying tip, if you can respond appropriately, do so.

Here’s how Apple does it:

  1. Follow your tracks

Once you have identified a leader, go to their profile and follow them. If they do the same, you can have more sophisticated and effective interactions.

  1. Link to your website

Whatever the reason for contacting the customer, include a link to your website if necessary. However, only do this if it is directly related to the request – one word can make you come across as a salesman rather than someone who wants to offer expertise.

A good practice might be to add a link to your first answer, and then just answer follow-up questions when the link is not needed to expand your answer.

For example, if someone asks: What’s the best Japanese restaurant in Seattle? If you know about it, reply with a friendly message and provide a link. How? Hey, we think we’re pretty good! Come and visit us! [Link].

Then, when they ask: Do you have a dog? You can just answer: Yeah, and that’s great! Or not, we have [an acceptable replacement].
