In 2023, we’ll all be living in our own apartments in 35 story towers that are completely filled with windows. We’ll be able to see everything around us, and nothing will be hidden from us. We’ll be able to see what our friends are up to, what they’re eating, even what they’re dreaming about. We’ll be able to live in the moment, and every moment will be more exciting than the last. That’s what the future will look like, and that’s what’s happening in 2023.

We live in a world in which we’re constantly being told what to think, when to think it, and how to think it. Even if you don’t believe in God, in the U.S., there’s just something about the idea of a God figure in the sky that gets people’s attention. So, when you’re laying out your marketing plan for your church, the plan is supposed to be God’s hand. But, in recent years, it’s become clear that this is actually a marketing strategy used by many companies to get the attention of consumers.

Everybody knows that if you want to make something into the next big thing, you have to start making noise about it now. You have to create waves that attract attention. If you want to be noticed, you have to make your actions stand out. With that in mind, I think we’re heading into what I call a “Baby Boomer Paradox” era. We’re entering a stage of the economy where things are pretty good overall for the average consumer, but the older generation is getting smarter. That means that consumers are planning for a more successful financial future than ever before, and that means people are starting to plan their futures to meet their own needs, rather than what happens to them.

Do you remember a time when only celebrities and big companies had personal brands? Actors, musicians, Fortune 100 companies and athletes got all the attention and dominated the airwaves.

Today, almost anyone willing to invest time and effort can become a thought leader in a particular niche. Of course, this will not happen overnight.

A quick Google search is all it takes to see that people around the world are using new personal branding tools, including social media, to create personal brands that attract countless people to their websites and social media accounts.

Personal branding is what sets you apart from the rest of the people who want to succeed in your field. By creating a personal brand, you can become a visible figure that people know, like and trust.

Follow these seven simple steps to become a leading expert in your field.

Step 1. Start finding your niche

There is a saying about SEO traffic that highlights what most people overlook.

You cannot create a search rule. You can only harvest.

This means you can’t make people search for a specific keyword. Either they already know this, or they are looking for something else.

Your SEO task is to recognize this fact and strive to get as much traffic as possible from words that are already popular in their own right.

Personal branding is the same, believe it or not.

For example, there is no point in being the best CrossFit pug breeder in the world if there is no market or niche for it. (Seriously, does that exist?!)

The process of choosing a niche is really important! You don’t want to spend all your time and energy tying your brand to a niche that isn’t growing.

Where to start when choosing a niche?

This is a good question because there is no right answer, but here is where you should start.

Choose a specific activity that you are better at than 90% of the people in the world.

Why is it so specific? Because you’re probably good at a lot of things, but that doesn’t mean you’re an expert at everything.

The only way to build a personal brand is to become an important and recognized authority on a particular topic.

If you’re not an expert in that field, someone else is. Don’t be afraid to go in a small or narrow direction to master a subject.

The field of online marketing, for example, is very broad, and it took me almost a decade to become a recognized authority.

Take Brian Dean, for example, who decided to delve into a particular subject instead of biting off more than he could chew.

Notice how perfectly he positions his personal brand. SEO is all about backlinks and ranking.

Then the site’s graphics, design and commentary reinforce these points.

However, there is another important part of a successful personal brand. One that says more about your own style and perspective on the subject.

step 2. Give your personal brand personality

The first step (finding your niche) is about your own skills and the potential value of the market.

The second step focuses on what you personally contribute to the position. It’s your point of view or your tone that sets you apart from everyone else talking about the same topics.

For example, I want to be seen as a person with human qualities.

That’s why I often use jargon when I write. We are talking about a technical subject here, but I want to help you understand it in an easy to digest format.

A similar example is Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You to Be Rich.

He works in personal finance, which is full of shady people making suspicious recommendations.

Ramit takes the opposite approach and uses casual language, inside jokes and F-bombs to show that he is honest and not hiding anything.

My favorite post is about avocado toast, in which he completely refutes another columnist’s terrible advice about personal finance.

Ash Embirge of The Middle Finger Project also uses strong vocabulary and a no B.S. attitude that makes people want to listen and pay attention.

Such polarization may alienate some people, but it may also help you create enthusiastic fans who would find the politically correct treatment of the same material disingenuous.

Now compare this example with someone speaking on similar topics, but in a completely different style and tone: Marie Forleo.

They may cover similar topics, but Mary’s personality (and thus the content, design and other brand elements) are diametrically opposed.

While Ash occasionally slips between PG-13 and R, Marie has a solid G rating.

What you say is very important, yes. But the way you put it, it could be. Make sure you choose a tone that works for you and the connection.

step #3. Creating a corporate identity

Have you noticed a trend in the last few people mentioned?

From my side to Ramit, Ash and then Mary?

Go back and check their websites. What have you noticed?

The design is impeccable.

They each have their own website, beautiful photos and even their logos are easily recognizable.

Why invest so much in the appearance and functionality of these sites?

After all, according to a scientific study, 94% of a person’s first impression is based on design, and it only takes 50 milliseconds to make a split-second decision.

Appearance is an important part of building a personal brand. There is also a secondary benefit.

A consistent design helps them become recognizable no matter where they post or communicate online, from their website to media sites like Entrepreneur.com or even Facebook and Twitter.

The first step is to create a brand or logo for your brand. Here are some of my favorite resources to help you do just that.

99designs is a crowdsourcing service of design patterns from people all over the world. You can set a budget and explain what you are looking for, and then sit back and watch the designers begin to present their ideas.

You can then decide which ones are on the right track, give them feedback to refine the logo and disqualify the others.

And most importantly: If you are not satisfied with the options offered, you do not have to pay.

If you feel that the design samples you have received do not meet your expectations, you can take advantage of a 100% money back guarantee to get your money back.

Another cheaper alternative is LogoNerds, which is ideal if you’re on a tight budget. The cost of these logos is only $27!

In many cases, you can even have LogoNerds create a few samples to get ideas, and then pass them on to a more experienced designer to show you what direction you want to go or not go.

If you’re ready to play in the big leagues (on an appropriate budget), you can find great designers for personal collaborations on Dribbble.

Top designers use Dribbble to showcase their work and latest projects so you can get a feel for their style.

Many of them also include brand concepts or ideas for logos, like these Brand Elements by Steve Wolf, so you can get an idea of what yours might look like.

Professional design is often what sets the true experts apart from the rest.

Start with a logo to build a working relationship with a designer you like, because that’s worth its weight in gold when it comes to redesigning your website.

step #4. Create and redesign your personal website

Look at this: There’s a lot of noise outside.

You’ve probably heard the stats already. For example, the one that says five million blog posts are published every day.

This means that your content should not only be good, but also published often (at least twice a week).

When you consistently produce good content under your own name, it creates a bond between you and the audience you want to reach.

That’s what I mean.

Google Neil Patel Marketing.

My content appears everywhere from Entrepreneur.com to Inc. and beyond.

These sites are so good that they often rank well in search engines. Imagine working hard to become an expert on a topic, but when people search for you on Google, they end up on a different website than yours.

Disappointing, huh?!

Therefore, it is essential to have your own website and strive to increase its authority to build your personal brand.

Look at this! I own and control almost all websites on the first page of the SERPs with my name.

If someone wants to know more about me, they go to one of my sites, not someone else’s.

This means I can convert a much higher percentage of people into new interested customers each month.

My content and social strategies are one of the main reasons why my sites rank higher than other mainstream media sites.

Step 5. Developing content and social strategy

Content marketing costs 62% less than traditional marketing and generates three times more leads.

This statistic says it all!

Consider the SERP example from the previous step.

If all my sites are ranked high, it’s because of the quality content I’ve published over the years.

There’s no mystery here: just lots and lots of constant work.

Personally, I think long and in-depth content is best for lead generation and good ranking. For example, some of my articles are over 10,000 words long and require a full table of contents!

Look at these social action figures!

My readers love long texts (the statistics prove it), which is why I keep publishing them.

The same goes for my advanced tutorials, which are not only thorough but also beautifully designed.

The trick is to determine what type of content works best for you and your readers.

MarketingProfs, for example, is another important website for marketing professionals. However, its content is completely different from mine.

MarketingProfs focuses on workshops, webinars and other data, not detailed tutorials. So there is no right answer.

Your content strategy should also extend to your social media channels.

But remember, you don’t have to have a presence on every social platform.

Spreading yourself too thin (and not updating often enough) is almost worse than not having a presence at all on social platforms.

So, again: Address your own audience. Where are they?

For example, these are the biggest social sites today, based on their audience.

Your own product or service also plays an important role. For example, a wedding planner might not get much traction on Twitter. On the other hand, if a wedding planner focuses on an image-centric social platform like Pinterest or Instagram, it’s a win-win!

step #6. Guest blog to promote your brand

At first, no one will know who you really are.

It’s good! It is very important to understand this as soon as possible before it is too late.

Unfortunately, if you spend all your time on posting good content on your website, you will be wasting your time.

Instead, you have to spend more time going to other sites first.

Focus on sites that already have the traffic and audience you want to target. For example, if you become a regular visitor to a major website like Forbes, you will immediately become known in the industry.

You can now use this traffic to bring people back to your own site when they are looking for more information about you.

In many cases, you can add your bio and title to these sites.

Instead of being the default founder of a company no one has ever heard of, you can use this valuable real estate to plant the seeds of your personal brand. Embody your niche and bring elements of your personality.

step #7. Search supervisor

There is no such thing as a self-made person.

They had to get help from someone, somewhere, at some point in their lives.

Similarly, becoming a recognized expert in a particular field can be incredibly difficult at first.

Finally, you should be recognized as an expert by other well-known players in the industry, which will strengthen your brand and help you reach the top in your chosen niche.

Even Tiger Woods, perhaps the most successful golfer of all time, worked with a swing coach for most of his career.

Think about it.

This man apparently didn’t have to listen to anyone; yet he used mentors to help him improve his game.

80% of CEOs surveyed in a study said they had a mentor helping them early in their career.

Almost every successful entrepreneur I know has had mentors who have helped them become the recognized experts they are today.
